Message from the Chair: Occupational Therapy

Welcome to the New York Institute of Technology Department of Occupational Therapy!
Since the establishment of our original bachelor’s program in 1996, ¶®É«µÛ has been committed to preparing occupational therapy practitioners who are thoughtful, skilled, ethical, and ready to meet the evolving needs of individuals, communities, and society. Today, our department is home to two accredited entry-level graduate pathways: the Occupational Therapy, M.S., and the Doctor of Occupational Therapy, OTD.
Both pathways prepare students for entry-level occupational therapy practice through a strong foundation in occupation-centered care, clinical reasoning, evidence-informed practice, hands-on learning, supervised fieldwork, and professional development. The M.S. pathway offers a focused, practice-centered route to becoming an occupational therapist. The OTD pathway includes the same professional foundation with additional doctoral-level preparation in leadership, advocacy, scholarly inquiry, program development, and capstone work.
Our faculty bring diverse clinical, scholarly, and educational experience to the classroom, lab, and fieldwork preparation process. They are deeply committed to student learning, mentorship, professional identity development, and the use of evidence, technology, and adaptive approaches to support meaningful participation in everyday life.
At ¶®É«µÛ, occupational therapy students learn in a close professional community. Students build relationships with faculty and peers, develop practical skills through hands-on and community-based learning experiences, and engage with interdisciplinary opportunities across the university. Through coursework, lab experiences, fieldwork, and professional preparation, our students develop the knowledge, reasoning, and confidence needed to enter today’s complex healthcare, education, and community practice environments.
I encourage you to learn more about the ¶®É«µÛ experience, where learning is about doing, making, innovating, and healing. Explore our website to learn more about our programs, faculty, and students, and join us for an information session. Please feel free to contact us with questions or for further assistance. We look forward to helping you begin your journey toward becoming an occupational therapist.
